Fallow Class - Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1)

Dear Parents and Carers of Fallow Class

Welcome back to our Summer term.

We hope you had a wonderful break.  We will be hoping for some more sunshine this term to allow for plenty of opportunity for outdoor learning, as we embark on our topic of “I Spy” which is based around our local environment.  As always, please be prepared for British weather with a school cap, a raincoat and sun cream.

At the start of Term 6, Year 1 will have their formal phonics screening. Please feel assured that we do not put any child under additional pressure during these times. They are, nevertheless, of high importance and we are required by Government to complete them.

Our ongoing learning is cross-curricular and is designed to engage the children with their beautiful locality.  The humanities focus is Geography.  We will start by naming and locating the world’s continents and oceans. We will go on a welly walk in order to learn about our local physical and human geography in Chilton Foliat with a focus on advantages and disadvantages of living in a village. The children will explore world maps, atlases, globes and will construct simple maps themselves.

Our Art & Design and Computing will also closely align with our I spy topic as we will be looking at creating landscapes of our environment in a Claude Monet style as well as  taking digital photographs during our various welly walks.

The Christian value we are all sharing this term is Love and around the school we are encouraging all our children to show and put into practice this important value. For every value, we ask a Big Question and for this term it is ‘How do I contribute to a loving world?

Phonics (Year 1) and spelling (Year 2) will continue to be taught separately to each year group.  This enables small steps to be taken as appropriate to the age and stage of the children. English and Maths lessons are differentiated to both support and challenge both year groups, according to the needs of individuals and meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.

If you are able to offer support for any of our planned outdoor activities, please do let the office know as soon as the specific dates and times are published; your support will be much appreciated.

As always, the greatest focus for home learning is to support reading and phonics.

We are very grateful for your ongoing support and look forward to having a lot of fun with our new topic.

With thankfulness, courage and love and best wishes

Mrs Lambert, Miss Hearn and the Fallow Team
